While Nazarene Theological College was established primarily to prepare men and women for vocational ministry (pastor, teacher, missionary, para-church worker, etc), the college also recognizes its responsibility to provide for all Christians who want to be better equipped to serve God in their workplace, community and local church. NTC now attracts a wide range of students; some require theological education as a preparation for teaching, for youth work, as part preparation for appointment as lay missionaries abroad or simply as an excellent course in higher education. The College also attracts students from abroad who can receive credit towards liberal arts degrees in their own colleges. They value highly the educational experience of a semester or a year living and studying in Australia.

Those preparing for Christian ministry today confront an increasing complex world as they seek to fulfill their vocation. They are required to deal with human problems which, while they have never been more obvious or more pressing, are more resistant than ever to remediation. Ministers must learn to recognize shifts in cultural mores and develop the ability to contemporize their patterns of ministry in ways which remain faithful to their confessional position. They must master the art of proclaiming the Christian message in ways that are relevant and easily understood. These formidable demands require a strong academic foundation and a commitment to a lifetime of learning, teaching and service. There is a need to open up pathways to further study in wider settings as a means of maintaining lifelong ministerial effectiveness and developing those ministers who evidence potential for leadership among their peers.

OUR PURPOSE

The purpose of Nazarene Theological College is the development of Christian character while pursuing academic studies that will equip students for the work of the ministry—both vocational and lay. The over-riding focus of Nazarene Theological College is to provide readiness for mission and ministry in response to the Great Commandment and the Great Commission.

The total program is designed to be both academically sound and spiritually vital. While many of its graduates will minister under the auspices of the Church of the Nazarene, the College embraces the role and responsibility of preparing people for ministries in other denominations and Christian organizations. NTC graduates are currently involved in effective ministry in a variety of global ministry contexts.

Being a member institute of the Sydney College of Divinity, NTC offers a range of accredited programs. The primary undergraduate qualifications attainable are the Advanced Diploma of Theology (three years full-time) and the Bachelor of Theology degree (three years full-time). At postgraduate level, we currently offer a Graduate Diploma of Arts, Graduate Certificate in Theological Studies and Master of Arts. The College also offers its own internally validated qualifications in theology and ministry and these awards are granted for one, two or three years of full-time study.

Each of these qualifications may be obtained by part-time as well as full-time study.

The College provides valuable educational opportunities for Christian lay people who wish to gain an excellent academic qualification and for those who wish to be better prepared for service in the local church. Whether the interest is in a special year of study in Biblical subjects combined with an introduction to theology and practical courses or a longer course, time spent at the College will equip the lay person more fully for effective service as a youth leader, a church worker or a local preacher.

The College offers a threefold education: a general higher education in the humanities, the study of the theological disciplines, and vocational courses in the practical aspects of ministry.
